Norfolk “Carrstones” - a sandstone conglomerate formed during the Cretaceous Period. Red (containing iron), Green (containing the mineral glauconite) and, the much rarer Silver (containing little to no iron or glauconite).

Red and green carrstone can be seen in the cliffs at Hunstanton on The Wash. Red Carrstone is quarried commercially at Snettisham in Norfolk and is used as a building stone.

The only source of Silver Carr was at a quarry in Castle Rising (now closed) where blocks were used in the construction of the local castle during the 12th century. It was also quarried by the Romans for their shore fort at Brancaster in the 3rd century.
